Conductor
John H. Mitchell (M.A., B.S., University of Maryland) is now in his 40th year at DeMatha Catholic High School. He was a member of the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C. and has served as the president of the Maryland Band Directors Association. Mr. Mitchell is very active as an adjudicator at band festivals, and as a guest conductor for honor bands in the Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania areas. He has been a member of the conducting staff at the Tidewater Music Festival, the Mid-East Music Festival in Pittsburgh, and the Maryland Summer Center for the Arts.
Mr. Mitchell has been a guest conductor for the United States Navy Band, and was a guest conductor and clinician for the Royal Thai Army Band in Bangkok, Thailand.
In 1993, the National Catholic Education Association named Mr. Mitchell a “National Educator of Distinction”. He was one of seven high school educators nationwide selected. In 1996 Mr. Mitchell was selected by the Washington Post to be a recipient of the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award. Mr. Mitchell was recently inducted into the DeMatha High School Hall of Fame.
Mr. Mitchell recently accepted a position at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC as the director of the CUA Wind Ensemble.
