In Dal Choi
Baritone
In Dal Choi (D.M.A., Indiana University, B.M., Yonsei University)was born in Korea. Before coming to the United States, he was received a B. M. degree in voice from Yonsei University. He was also a member of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra as a violist.
He continued his voice training at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mozart Conservatorium in Germany, and at Indiana University where he was granted his Doctor of Music degree.
Mr. Choi has been soloist for the major oratorios such as Brahms’ Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Stabat Matter, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bloch’s Sacred Service and many others.
He has performed major roles in operas including Pagliacci, Fidelio, Tosca, Le Nozze Di Figaro, Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto, Cosi fan Tutte and others. He has appeared in hundreds of concerts and recitals in America, Canada, Korea, China and Hong Kong, including recitals at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City and Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
As conductor, he has directed the Festival Chorus for the International Festival sponsored by New York City and United Nations, and the Greater Choral Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington D. C.
He is a professor Emeritus of Music at James Madison University after serving for 32 years and an adjunct voice faculty member at the Catholic University of America. Among his honors is his selection in 2004 to receive the James Madison Distinguished Faculty Award. And he was appointed an Outstanding Cultural Diplomat by Prime Minister of Republic of Korea. Dr. Choi is a past president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Virginia Chapter. His former students perform at major opera houses in Europe, USA and Asia including the Metropolitan Opera House.
