Audition Information Packet

In addition to submitting a complete application for admission to The Catholic University of America, students applying to most undergraduate music degree programs are required to audition in their major performance area. Undergraduate students applying to the honors program in music history and literature are not required to audition. Students requesting early admission should audition on or before Saturday, December 6, 2008. All undergraduates who audition are considered for scholarship awards. Scholarship awards are based on talent, academic achievement, and financial need. Auditions are held in the School of Music on *Saturday, December 6, 2008; *Saturday, January 17, 2009; *Saturday, February 7, 2009; and **Saturday, March 28, 2009. 

*Musical theatre auditions will only be held on the these audition dates.

 

** Saturday, March 29th audition is only for graduate and transfer students who could not attend the previous audition dates (No Musical Theatre Auditions).

SNOW POLICY: When the university is closed, or opening is delayed due to inclement weather, auditions are canceled and will be rescheduled. Verify the university schedule by calling the university's main number (202-319-5000). In the event the university is closed because of inclement weather, please reschedule the date of your audition by calling the School of Music (202-319-5414).

Undergraduate Audition Requirements

 

Applicants should prepare a 10-minute audition of standard classical repertoire. Please call the school of music if you need a clarification regarding the standard repertoire or are uncertain about the appropriateness of a work you plan to audition. Audition committees reserve the right to select audition pieces. The audition should consist of three pieces in contrasting tempos and styles. An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions. Music for piano auditions must be memorized and should represent at least two style periods. Percussionists should prepare music for mallet, keyboard, timpani and snare drum. Woodwind, brass and percussion players may be asked to sight read.

 

Special Undergraduate Programs Audition Requirements

 

Musical Theatre

 

Applicants for the undergraduate program in musical theatre should bring a photo and résumé of musical/dramatic experience and prepare the following voice, acting and dance audition:

 

    Voice:

Two songs from musicals. The songs must be in contrasting styles (ballad, up-tempo); one must be from a musical written before 1960; each should be of a two-minute maximum duration; each must be memorized. Please bring copies of your music. An Accompanist will be provided.

    Acting:

Two one-minute monologues from plays contrasting in style and period. May be excerpts from a comedy or drama; choice must be appropriate to the candidate’s age and experience; must be memorized; should be performed in the context of the play, which the candidate must be able to discuss.

    Dance:

One-minute dance routine with accom-paniment on CD or tape. Appropriate dance clothes and shoes

(jazz or character) must be worn.

 

Taped auditions must be a videotape of a live audition in standard VHS or DVD format.

 

Composition

 

In addition to passing an audition in the major performance area, applicants for the undergraduate degree program in composition must submit two to three scores and recordings (if available) of original compositions to be reviewed and approved by the composition faculty.

 

Music Education

 

In addition to passing an audition in the major performance area, applicants must submit a well-written essay (two to three paragraphs), describing why they wish to become a music education major, what motivates that decision, and what do they hope to be able to accomplish as a music educator.

Graduate Audition and Application Information

 

Audition

    Master of Music degree programs

Applicants for M.M. degree programs must present a 10-minute audition, either in person or by tape. Composition applicants for both concert music and stage music emphases must present a portfolio of original works in lieu of the audition.

    Doctor of Musical Arts degree programs

Applicants for the D.M.A. degree programs must present a 10-minute audition only if they wish to be considered for music scholarship. This audition must be in person.

 

Any applicant, regardless of degree program, may audition for performance-based music scholarship.

 

Application

 

All application materials must be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions, The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC 20064. These materials include transcripts, letters of recommendation, test scores (GRE, TOEFL), programs and reviews, repertoire and professional experience records, portfolio of musical scores, résumés, etc.

 

All sacred music auditions will be held in the Spring Semester 2009, date TBAAll applicants for MMSM and DMA programs in Sacred Music (concentrations in choral music, organ performance and composition) must first contact Dr. Leo Nestor, (nestor@cua.edu).

 

All Applicants for Graduate degree programs in Orchestral Conducting must first contact Mr. David Searle, (searle@cua.edu).

Faculty

 

Active on the concert stage, and as lecturers and composers, our dynamic faculty is dedicated to teaching. Ask the students: phone us and tell us what your major will be, and we will put you in contact with some of our nearly 300 students.

 

 

Cultural Opportunities in Washington, D.C.

 

Students have easy access to the Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution museums, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, DAR Constitution Hall, The Phillips Collection, and The Corcoran Gallery of Art. First-rate theaters and concert halls, such as the Warner, National, Ford’s and the Folger, present performances ranging from modern jazz and experimental theater to chamber recitals and Shakespearean drama. Suburban theaters include the Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts and Merriweather Post Pavilion. Washington, D.C., is a major cultural center, an ideal city in which to study music.

 

Scholarships and Financial aid

 

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required for all applicants for need- and performance-based awards.

 

Academic-based: University scholarships are available. Graduate applicants: These scholarships require submission of GRE scores.

 

Need-based: University scholarships/loans, state grants, federal student aid and Catholic University grants are available.

 

Performance-based: School of music scholarship awards are based on talent, academic achievement and financial need. Priority scholarship consideration will be given to those who audition on or before Feb. 7, 2009.
