Grayson Wagstaff
Associate Professor and Chair, Musicology
Grayson Wagstaff, (Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin; B.M., James Madison University), associate professor of musicology, adviser of graduate programs in music history, and director of the Center for Graduate Study of Latin American Music. Specializing in late Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music in Spain and Colonial Mexico, his interests include sacred music, specifically Requiem traditions, Marian devotions and regional liturgical chant repertories. Recent work includes a study of Josquin's influence on Spanish music in the 16th century and an article examining the importance of Jesuit teachings on the development of Passion settings in the Renaissance. Author of articles in such journals as The Musical Quarterly, Journal of the Royal Music Association, Notes, Inter-American Music Review, the Journal of Plainsong and Medieval Music. Contributor to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians II, The Encyclopedia of the Renaissance, and The Reader's Guide to Music: History, Theory and Criticism. Frequent speaker at international musicological conferences and presenter at interdisciplinary conferences and symposia. Featured speaker at the Centro Nacional de Investigación, Documentación e Información Musical (CENIDIM), Mexico City. Frequent lecturer for arts education programs in the D.C. area, including Smithsonian Associates, Maryland Presents, Washington Opera and The Washington Performing Arts Society.
